Five things to Know Before starting your Writing Journey

Updated: Mar 16

Hello reader,

Today I am speaking about a subject that’s extremely important, and every writer should know before they start their writing journey. So, without further ado let's just jump into today’s topic.

Let’s face it writing is hard, and sometimes we’re unprepared for the journey that lay ahead, even if we think we have everything figured out.

As a writer sometimes you expect the road to be easier than it is or maybe you expect tons of money and fame, whatever the case the chances of that outcome are slim. Writing is hard, and if you’re doing it for money and fame instead of the love of it, that’s a problem.

  1. The story you originally planned to write may not be the story that comes to fruition.

Sometimes plans change, sorry to break it you. You may have an amazing story, with fleshed out characters. An incredible setting, and have everything planned to a tee, but still not Finish the book Because you are stuck in an endless loop. This happened to me personally the book I originally planned to publish years ago and end up in the putting in a draw. Or you may have started another story halfway through your current project, or just got bored with the project. There are endless reasons why you may not.

2. Time Waits for Nobody.

If you told me that I wouldn’t be where I want to be in my writing Career ten years ago, I’d Likely laugh in your face. I thought my writing plans would all line up as I expected. It didn't. The writing process is not always what you expect. There are good and bad writing days. And you need to keep the grit, and persistence on the hard days. It’ll be easier on the good days obviously. Plus, personal life can interfere with your writing time, setting a deadline back.

3. Stop even When You Want to Keep Going

One of my favorite YouTubers, K.A. Emmons said it best, "when we fill our cars with gas right, we don't than drive the car until it's empty and we break down." This is a great way to look at your writing routine, not only you won’t run out of energy, but you’re stopping at a scene that you’re excited for, and it makes you excited for your next writing session.

4. Motivation is fleeting

Everyone and their mother knows motivation’s unreliable here one day and gone the next. Don’t rely on it, point blank! Being a writer means writing even if the motivation is gone, unless your writing for fun, but if you want to make it a career that means pushing yourself on the hard days.

5. The Two-minute rule.

Speaking of Weaning Motivation, the two-minute rule can achieve wonders. Okay, first things first you need to make writing a habit before you apply this rule.

To start you have to break it down, you can’t write your novel without booting your computer, start with that. Once your ready, set a timer on your phone or an actual timer for two minutes and just write for that amount of time. Our brains like the easier path and this helps you start and once you’ve start you won’t want to stop, but if you decide you don’t want to continue after time’s up, don’t.

If you’ve read this to the end thank you, hoped you enjoyed.

Until next time!
