About the book:

Married in haste, repent in leisure--Mrs. Hale is about to find out how painful that repentance can truly be. Julia Hale ran off to be married in Gretna Green, following romance instead of common sense. But her tale isn't turning into a happily ever after. Her new husband is gone and she doesn't know where--or if he's ever coming back. Julia has no option but to head home to the family she betrayed by eloping and to hope they'll forgive her. Especially now that she might be carrying a baby from her brief marriage.

Major Thomas Hale has spent a lifetime trying to escape his past, only to discover he never really evade the consequences of his choices. Haunted by those determined to eliminate him as a threat, he runs to save himself-yet he hasn’t lost his pursuers, and he may have lost his wife forever.

I always loved, enjoyed and was fascinated with history and different time periods in it, which is the main reason I picked up this historical romance. From the first page it dragged me in. And wanted to see what happened to Julia. She knew how to speak her mind yet needed help to find her way.

Before I begun the book, I assumed that themes featured in the book would be much lighter than it actually was. I thought it’d be a romance with a twist of historical realism. However, the themes, and content are much edgier than I anticipated, for example the violence in it was raw. I don’t want to give to much away, but…in one instance a main character is badly beaten and almost killed.

It may just be me, and because the book is the third in the three-part series, and I haven’t read the first two before reading this book. But certain scenes were a little under explained, and I found myself to quickly trying to catch myself up.

Though the whole book I found myself rooting for Julia and Thomas to get back together, every time they were they’d have some obstacle in the way whether it’d be Julia’s family, or the enemies Thomas was running from.

On the whole I loved this book and a book. It Hale kept me on my toes, waiting to see what else happened until the last page. I highly suggest checking this book out. And am willing to read the entire regency bride series. And future books by Carolyn Miller.
